Fire service encourage people to Be Warm, Be Safe this winter
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service are urging residents to keep warm safely this winter as temperatures drop and utility costs rise.
As the cost of living increases, so too does the need to heat your home cheaply. However, this can bring with it some serious dangers. And with more people looking to low-cost, unsafe ways to heat their homes this winter, comes an increased likelihood of accidental house fires.
The latest safety campaign aims to provide advice to the local community on how to stay warm safely and not put themselves or others at risk.
Here are some top tips from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service:
- Be sure to switch off electric items like chargers, washing machines and electric blankets when not in use, you’re going out or going to bed
- If you have a log burner or open fire, keep yourself and any flammable items like clothing a safe distance away
- Avoid storing logs and fuel near the heat source
- Use torches or LED lights and candles to light your home instead of real candles
- If you’re using electrical items like a portable heater or electric blanket, make sure you plug them into a wall socket rather than an extension lead
- Don’t use any outdoor equipment like BBQs inside your home as they let off carbon monoxide
- Make sure that you have a working smoke alarm on every level of your home
