Staffordshire communities celebrate 80th anniversary of VE Day
Yesterday, residents and communities across the UK came together to mark VE Day (Victory in Europe Day), commemorating 79 years since the end of World War II in Europe on 8th May 1945.
The day was a chance to reflect on the immense sacrifices made by the Armed Forces and civilians during the war, and to honour the resilience and courage shown during one of the most challenging periods in modern history.
Locally, people paid their respects with moments of silence, remembrance events, and the display of Union Flags. Many also took time to remember loved ones and share stories of the wartime generation.
VE Day continues to serve as a powerful reminder of the value of peace and unity, and the importance of remembering those who gave so much for future generations.
Visitors to Perton library on Saturday, 10th May can see a flypast of a Lancaster Bomber, as part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The flypast is due around 1.30pm. |
Fly-tipping in South Staffordshire court result
A Wolverhampton man has appeared in court this week, accused of fly tipping in South Staffordshire in June last year.
Dr Igbonekwu, of Beech Road, pleaded guilty to the offence, having previously admitted responsibility during an interview with South Staffordshire Council Envirocrime officers. The council had installed a camera in the area to address persistent fly-tipping and captured footage of him throwing bin bags of rubbish into the undergrowth. He was fined £961, with a £384 victim surcharge and costs of £821 awarded to the council.
In 2024, South Staffordshire Council spent almost £90,000 on clearing away rubbish which had been dumped by waste criminals. Reducing this figure would enable us to spend this money on other services. Government figures show that in 2023/2024, 60% of fly tipped rubbish nationally was household waste.
Often, household waste is fly-tipped by people who have been paid to take rubbish away rather than householders fly-tipping their own waste. The council is keen to highlight the importance to householders of being diligent about who takes waste away from their homes in order to reduce fly-tipping in the district in order to keep our environment pleasant for everyone. |
Branching out: Tree talk inspires local interest in Wombourne 🌳
Local residents in Wombourne recently enjoyed a fascinating talk on the importance of trees, delivered by Darren Allen, South Staffordshire Council’s Tree Inspector and Tree Team Operational Manager.
The event was hosted by the Wombourne Historical and Scientific Society at the invitation of Dr Simon Keeling.
Held in the Bead Room, the talk drew an audience of around 50 community members. Darren shared his in-depth knowledge of tree biology, the value of trees in tackling climate change, their significance in our landscapes, and the laws that help protect them.
The talk was very well received and sparked lively discussion, with many attendees expressing a renewed appreciation for the trees in their local environment. Darren’s engaging session was so popular that he has already been invited back to speak again in the future.
It’s great to see council staff sharing their expertise and helping to strengthen connections within our local communities.
