Prevent fires: Keep batteries and vapes out of the bin
There was a 70% increase in UK battery related fires in waste sites and bin lorries between 2022 and 2024.
Lithium-ion batteries found in everyday household items such as mobile phones, vapes, and power tools are the main contributor.
Improper disposal in waste bins may lead to them becoming damaged or crushed during collection, leading to significant fires.
South Staffordshire collect small electrical items (up to 35x40cm in size) and household batteries as part of the kerbside waste and recycling collection service.
Residents should place items in a carrier bag (not black sacks) alongside their bin on collection day.
The crews will place this in a separate part of the truck for onward recycling and disposal.
Alternatively, they can be taken to recycling centres across Staffordshire (not Wombourne) or deposited in dedicated containers found in supermarkets and shops.
Light bulbs, fluorescent tubes or car/industrial batteries will not be collected; these should be disposed of safely at recycling centres across Staffordshire. Click here for more info👉 Bins and bags | South Staffordshire District Council |

Wombourne Library refurbishment update
Wombourne Library is to be completely refurbished soon as part of a £5 million modernisation programme.
Wombourne library is one of 10 larger Staffordshire County Council libraries undergoing extensive work in the next few years.
A temporary library will open in the adjoining community centre, while the main building is transformed.
After the library closes its doors at 4pm on Saturday, 2nd August, staff will transfer books to the temporary library, which will open on Thursday, 7th August.
Work is scheduled to last approximately three months, with the library reopening in the autumn.
Hayley Coles, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for Communities and Culture, said: “Staffordshire’s libraries are a valuable part of their communities.
This investment is for libraries that haven’t been improved in recent years and the money will be spent entirely on improving the public areas.
There will be a children’s area, free wifi and internet access, and space for people to work on their own devices, access business start-up advice and other services.
The children’s area will be much larger and better able to support youngsters with Special Educational Needs.”
In the last decade the county council has opened new libraries in Newcastle, Stafford, Codsall and Lichfield, while completely refurbishing Burton and Tamworth. |

Protecting our children:
The importance of vaccinations
Vaccinations protect babies and young children from serious and potentially life-threatening diseases like measles, polio, meningitis, whooping cough, and more.
They’re safe, effective, and free on the NHS.
From birth to age five, your child will be offered a series of vaccines to help build lifelong protection.
Your GP will contact you when each vaccination is due, so you don’t need to worry about remembering the schedule yourself.
To learn more about which vaccines are offered and when, visit the NHS website: 👉 https://www.nhs.uk/vaccinations/nhs-vaccinations-and-when-to-have-them/ |
