Food waste collection service:
Answering your questions
You may have heard the news that a new food waste collection service will be coming to South Staffordshire this summer – turning leftovers, scraps and out-of-date goods into energy, fertilizer and compost.
The initiative, being introduced nationally in line with government legislation, will see all residents receive new food caddies this spring – with each household receiving one smaller, light grey caddy for use in the home, and a larger, brown, secure outside caddy for kerbside collection.
It’s a brand-new service for the district and many people may have questions.
We hope to answer some of them here:
Will it smell?
There are a range of measures in place to prevent the caddies producing odours – and things you can do too.
- For the majority of people, their food waste will be collected twice as often as it is now – food waste caddies will be collected weekly alongside blue bins and grey bins.
- South Staffordshire Council will be providing liners, meaning both caddies will stay clean, and allows for easier transportation from the smaller, indoor caddy to the larger, outdoor caddy.
- Keep the caddy clean with a quick wipe or wash when needed (they are also dishwasher safe).
Will it attract flies or vermin?
A number of factors will help to prevent this.
- Keep the outdoor caddy lid closed using the ‘locking’ handle. Store your outside caddy out of direct sunlight where possible.
- Food waste will likely remain indoor for less time than it does now, as the indoor caddies are far smaller than the average kitchen bin.
- For the majority of people, their food waste will be collected twice as often as it is now – food waste caddies will be collected weekly alongside blue bins and grey bins.
Is the launch of this service going to add to my council tax bill?
No, it won’t.
- The service will be provided at no additional cost to residents, with the council receiving funding from the government to introduce the service.
- The caddies and the liners will be provided free of charge by South Staffordshire Council. We will also replace them for free when they run out.
Why is this happening?
Local authorities across the country have all been asked to do this by central government. It has environmental benefits too.
- All councils in England are required by government to provide a separate food waste collection service from 2026.
- This new service will see food waste turned into energy, fertilizer and compost – giving new life to what was previously thrown away.

Managing high blood pressure
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a common condition that often has no symptoms but can lead to serious health problems if left untreated.
It occurs when blood consistently pushes too strongly against artery walls, causing them to become stiff or narrow and increasing the risk of heart attack or stroke.
Other complications can include kidney failure, heart failure, vision problems, and vascular dementia. Because hypertension rarely causes noticeable signs, regular blood pressure checks are essential for early detection and management.
Understanding your readings and taking steps to maintain healthy levels can significantly reduce long‑term health risks.
