Heat health alert issued
A heat health alert has been issued by the UK Health Security Agency.
The alert is in place until tomorrow (August 13th) for all regions of England.
Temperatures are not forecast to reach the record-breaking levels of the most recent heatwave, but may reach mid-30 degrees celsius today and Saturday in South Staffordshire – plus the South East, London, the South West, and the East and West Midlands.

What’s on this weekend
Charity family fun day
A charity event takes place at Kewford Eagles Football Ground in Hinksford tomorrow.
A charity football match will form part of the day, plus stalls, rides, face painting, food and more. The fun day runs from 12-6pm.
Around 500 people are expected to attend.
South Staffordshire Council’s Environmental Health and Licensing Team has been working with the organisers with a view to helping them deliver a safe and successful event.
This event going ahead is subject to the weather conditions.

Meet the new South Staffordshire Council chairman
Councillor Dr Matt Ewart was elected as chairman of South Staffordshire Council on May 10th.
He was first elected as a district member for the Codsall North ward of South Staffordshire Council on May 5th, 2011.
A resident of Codsall for more than 30 years, Cllr Ewart is originally from Edinburgh, where he was born and grew up. He spent 25 years working for the Ministry of Agriculture as an advisory microbiologist.

Bremen wreath laying
Council chairman, Councillor Dr Matt Ewart, joined other civic heads at a wreath laying and service of remembrance at the German Military Cemetery.
The Cannock event was led by the chairman of Staffordshire County Council, Councillor Paul Snape.
The event was part of a German War Graves Commission Friendship Camp where young people from Germany and Staffordshire spent two weeks together from July 24th to August 7th.
The camp was to help maintain the German Military Cemetery on Cannock Chase and for the young people to learn about peace and reconciliation since the World Wars.
The visit is organised by Staffordshire Council of Voluntary Youth Services (SCVYS) in partnership with the German War Graves Commission.
New provider for The Hub Cafe
A new provider is soon taking over the management of The Hub Cafe.
As a result of the handover, the cafe facility will not be available between August 15th and 30th, to enable the new provider to mobilise.
The new cafe will open on August 31st with a soft launch and will be fully operational from September 5th. We would like to extend our thanks to the current management of The Hub Cafe for their excellent quality and service. |
Five-star rated food outlets
Our Environmental Health team has had the pleasure of awarding a number of food outlets the top rating of five stars for food safety over the last month.
The food hygiene rating reflects the standards of food hygiene found on the date of the inspection. The food hygiene rating is not a guide to food quality.

Leisure latest
Wombourne Leisure Centre revamp starts
Refurbishment work started at Wombourne Leisure Centre this week to upgrade the entrance, reception, and pool changing rooms.
The swimming pool deck will undergo work later this year.
During the works, swimmers will need to arrive swim ready and be pre-pared to ‘robe and go’, as swimming changing rooms are temporarily unavailable whilst the changing rooms undergo refurbishment.
Penkridge Swimming Lessons resume
Swimming lessons at Penkridge have re-started this week and swim instructors have enjoyed welcoming learners back to their lessons.

Lasting legacy of the Commonwealth Games
The Commonwealth Games has connected people, improved health and wellbeing, acted as a catalyst for change and helped the region to grow and succeed.
South Staffordshire Council’s leisure centres provide a wide range of sports activities and facilities for the whole family.
In addition to general facilities, the leisure centres have various clubs operating from the venues to provide children, adults and people with disabilities access to a range of sports.
Clubs and sessions on offer include netball, cricket, football, badminton, swimming lessons and swim clubs, tennis, judo and kayaking.

Cheslyn Hay Table Tennis Marathon
Cheslyn Hay table Tennis club is holding a Table Tennis Marathon.
The marathon takes place on Saturday, August 20th, from 8am-8pm.

Essential resurfacing work to the driveway into Baggeridge is now underway.
Phase one is complete and we are looking forward to getting the final stage completed soon.

Help for Households and Cost of Living Payments
The Government is providing £37 billion this year to help households combat the rising cost of living.
If you’re eligible, you’ll be paid automatically in the same way you usually get your benefit or tax credits. This includes if you’re found to be eligible for a Cost of Living Payment or a Disability Cost of Living Payment at a later date.

Staffordshire History Festival
The annual Staffordshire History Festival starts in September.
The event is Staffordshire Library, Arts, Archive and Heritage’s two-month celebration of our local history and cultural heritage in Staffordshire and beyond.
There will be a wide selection of stock displays, events, talks and activities in Staffordshire libraries, plus plenty of online content again via thier social media.
