Parish Summit event – November 2024
South Staffordshire Council hosted its last parish summit of the year last Thursday, and the event was well attended by parishes.
A key focus of the day was an opportunity to update parishes on some of the proposed policy changes – a session led by Annette Roberts Corporate Director of Place and Communities.
A choice of four workshops were offered covering:
- Safe Communities – led by Maggie Quinn
- Financial Resilience for our communities – Led by Michelle Kettles and Karen Riley
- Tackling Climate Change Locally – led by Ryan Taylor
- Engaging our communities and Digital Inclusion – led by Alex Evans and Rachel Maguire
The workshops provided attendees a variety of breakout sessions to choose from.
In our workshop the attendees were clearly amazed at all the work SSDC are doing to reach out to our most vulnerable residents and communities, the partnerships we are developing and the support packages we deliver.
Michelle, with the support of Karen highlighted the work of the welfare support and creating brighter futures teams over the last 12 months.
She also outlined the development of key partnerships to reach the most vulnerable including with AgeUK, Homesplus, the Co-OP and Staffordshire County Councils public health team, the significance of the warmer/welcome spaces across the district and the value of trusted conversations with our residents.
Delegates listed several community events that would welcome the support of these teams over the next 12 months.
As part of the market place activity several partners such as Warmer Homes, Everyone Health and Support Staffordshire, attended the event, with Everyone Health providing free NHS health checks.
All of the Locality Enablers were in attendance. |
Sytch Lane Community Bulb Planting event is a huge success!
Over 50 volunteers joined us at Sytch Lane Cemetery in Wombourne last Saturday for our community bulb planting and Green Flag raising event and we’d like to say a huge “thank you” to everyone that came along and made the day a great success!
We were quite lucky with the weather apart from one heavy downpour and after a couple of hours of hard work, we held a short ceremony where the Green Flag was raised to celebrate achieving the prestigious award in the summer.
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard across the UK and around the world. Find out more here: The Green Flag Award – Green Flag Award
The Chairman of the Council, Cllr Dan Kinsey, and the Leader of the Council, Cllr Kath Perry MBE, said a few words to mark the occasion. Mike Wood, MP for Kingswinford and South Staffordshire was also in attendance, along with Cllr Mike Davies, Cabinet Member for Community Services, Cllr Martin Perry and Cllr Ray Perry.
Thank you also to Forest of Mercia CIC who kindly donated trees for volunteers to take home with them, along with a bag of free bulbs.

You can collect your alarm from Codsall Community Hub, Wolverhampton Road, WV8 1PX from Monday, 18th November to Monday, 23rd December, between 9am and 5pm (or you can contact your local parish council).
A449 Stafford Rd roadworks commencing December
There are upcoming road works taking place at the A449 Stafford Road.
The work constitutes the following :
- Advanced vegetation clearance of the highway verge to provide access to our working areas. This work will be taking place in December 2024. To complete our work safely there will be off-peak lane closures between 9am and 3.30pm on both A449 carriageways.
- Installation of temporary barrier to provide a safe working area for our workforce. This work will require alternative overnight carriageway closures on the A449 Stafford Road northbound and southbound and will be undertaken between 13-17 January 2025. Our working times will be from 8pm to 6am. A fully signed diversion route will be in place during the closures, with access to properties maintained. The diversion route can be seen on the map attached.
- Following completion of this work, a day and night-time single lane closure on the northbound and southbound carriageways will remain in place until the completion of the new laybys. Our work will be completed in Summer 2025.
These highways works are related to the construction of the West Midlands Interchange development.
We apologise in advance for any disturbances these works may cause.
