Would you risk a £500 fine?
Between September and December 2024, South Staffordshire Council issued three Fixed Penalty Notices for littering offences.
These penalty notices cost £500, or £400 if paid within 10 days and are issued when we have sufficient proof that someone is responsible for committing a littering offence that we could take them to court. We also issued two Fixed Penalty Notices for Household Duty of Care offences, which cost £400.
This offence is where domestic rubbish is fly tipped by someone other than the householder and the householder has failed to take reasonable steps to ensure that the rubbish was lawfully disposed of, such as taking the name of who took the rubbish or checking that they are a registered waste carrier.
During this time period, we had three envirocrime cases in court – two for littering offences and one for a fly tipping offence. The littering offences resulted in total fine and costs of £454 and £558, whilst the fly tipping offence resulted in a total fine and costs of £2482.
When we receive income from Fixed Penalty Notices or court awarded costs, this money is reinvested into the Envirocrime service area to assist in schemes to reduce future offending, to enhance the environment and to assist in investigation and enforcement.
This table shows fly-tipping numbers by locality for February this year compared to last year. While there is a small increase this February, the overall cumulative trend for the tax year so far reflects a 14% reduction, which is very positive.
