Be warm. Be safe.
Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service are urging people to stay safe during the cold snap after a portable heater led to a house fire in South Staffordshire, which was later discovered to be preventable.
Crews were called at 10.10pm on Monday, 10th November to a house on Manor House Park, Bilbrook, following reports of a fire.
Station Manager Tim Hollingworth, who attended the scene, said: “As the weather gets colder, people will be looking for cost-effective ways to heat their homes, but it is crucial that this is done safely.
“Portable heaters should always be kept away from clothing and other materials and should always be plugged into the wall, instead of extension leads because they can easily be overloaded and overheat.”

Cost of living support this winter
South Staffordshire welfare services team have been supporting residents with cost of living and eating well as we enter the winter months.
| Community groups and hubs have identified isolated low-income residents who would benefit from a slow cooker.
Over 100 cookers have been distributed across the district including Essington, Cheslyn Hay, Bilbrook, Penkridge, Huntington, and Codsall.
Beneficiaries include families using food banks and individuals with health concerns.
Councillor Gary Burnett, Bilbrook stated “The scheme is very popular. Slow cookers are great for residents of pension age living alone, helping them prepare easy, nutritious meals while saving energy.”
Councillor Megan Barrow, Cabinet member for Welfare Services, shared: “Vulnerable residents, and families using local food banks, are benefiting from this project.
If you’d like a slow cooker or know someone who would benefit, join us at one of our upcoming welfare support events:
● 4th Dec – Codsall Hub (Council Offices), Codsall (WV8 1PX) · 12.30-3.30pm
● 10th Dec – Bilbrook Village Hall, Joeys Lane, Bilbrook (WV8 1JL) · 11am-2pm |
