On Thursday, July 4th the Parliamentary Election was held to elect a Member of Parliament for Kingswinford & South Staffordshire and Stone, Great Wyrley and Penkridge.
Here are a few statistics below which gives an overview of the scale of the event: |
|
We are officially on countdown with just under twelve weeks to go for our 50-year anniversary celebration!
As we prepare to commemorate this significant milestone, we will be sending out a survey shortly and are asking residents of South Staffordshire to send in their stories, photographs and memories of our borough to record our history.
It’s a great chance to celebrate:
Have you got a special memory of South Staffordshire? It could be of a particular place, view or building that you love and feel should be celebrated?
We would love to hear and see your photos of South Staffs in the last 50 years. Whether its a favourite spot or a special or unusual event, please share your memory with us to: Comms@sstaffs.gov.uk.
Councillor Roger Lees commented on this momentous occasion:
‘It’s a huge honour to mark the start of the 50th anniversary of South Staffordshire Council and it has been an honour to serve our community.’
Staffordshire County Council is dedicated to cutting greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change and acknowledges the necessity of adapting to our evolving climate.
Working together to reduce climate change impacts across Staffordshire is a top priority. The Climate Change Action Fund offers financial assistance to local communities to build resilience and reduce Staffordshire’s contributions to climate change. For more info please click on the link below ⬇️ |
South Staffordshire council is committed to supporting the district’s business community.
We are targeting a portion of our UKSPF allocation to support our local business, with a focus on those operating in the village centres We have established a ‘shop front’ grant scheme to support and sustain existing businesses in the village centres, this grant will help to improve the look and feel of our village centres, making those shops more attractive to passing visitors and local residents increasing trade and footfall. The Shop Front Grant is available to independent retail and hospitality businesses and property owners in South Staffordshire’s village centres to improve their shop front or to bring vacant premises back into use. The objective of the grant is to support traders and the local economy as well as improving the retail environment for shoppers, residents, and visitors. |

Message from Councillor Dan Kinsey, Chairman of South Staffordshire –
You may, or may not, be aware that my Chairman’s Charity this year is actually three – Papyrus, Staffordshire Blood Bikes, and South Staffordshire First Responders.
I will be putting on a number of charity fundraisers across the year, but already in the diary is a Sky Dive I will undertake in August (hoping it doesn’t get delayed by the weather…). So for this, you don’t need to purchase tickets, get dressed up, come to an event or anything like that – just make a donation to some very worthy causes!
Please see the link here to my JustGiving page, and please share this as far and as wide as you feel is appropriate.

If anyone would like a sponsorship form to help me in this endeavour, please let us know, and we’ll get something to you.
I hope you can help me in this exciting challenge.
-Councillor Dan Kinsey

As part of our commitment to tackle violence against women and girls the Violence Reduction Alliance (VRA) is promoting the Ask for Angela campaign across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.
The Ask for Angela initiative aims to ensure that anyone who is feeling vulnerable or unsafe is able to get help and support discreetly. This could be on a night out, on a date or meeting friends. The initiative works by training staff in vulnerability management and what to do when someone does ‘Ask for Angela’. When someone asks for Angela, the trained member of staff will understand the person is in need of help and support and will be able to respond in an appropriate, discreet way. This could be offering them an alternative way out of the venue, calling them a taxi, or in a more serious situation alerting venue security and/or calling the Police. The Violence Reduction Alliance (VRA) wants to reinforce the message that women and girls, including anybody who may find themselves vulnerable during the night-time economy, has the right to feel safe. To support this night-time economy workers to do this, there is free Vulnerability Training for anybody working in the night-time economy. You can find out more information and resources for the Ask for Angela campaign here: Ask for Angela – Violence Reduction Alliance. |

Following the sad removal of a dead old Black Poplar tree at Oaken Lawn, Kingswood Common, our tree team sought to replace it with new trees to provide future benefits and enjoyment for residents and visitors passing through.
The Black Poplar tree (Poplus Nigra) is considered one of Britain’s most endangered rare species, with only approximately 7,000 remaining in the UK. The majority of these trees are male so reproducing these trees can be difficult, with very limited supply available. Black Poplar’s can grow to an impressive height of 25m and live for up to 200 years. They are very rugged in their appearance with deep fissured bark. They are deciduous trees, meaning they drop their leaves in autumn time. They have become rare due to excessive harvesting over the centuries and priority was given to planting other tree species due to the potential size of this tree resulting in their scarcity. Darren Allen, Tree Inspector and Tree Team Operational Manager, would like to give special thanks to Keri Lloyd, Chairman of the Friends of Bilbrook, for sourcing the trees and to Staffordshire Wildlife Trust for supplying the trees. |
The leisure centres will be closed for the Bank Holiday on Monday, May 27th. |

Customers will be required to arrive swim-ready, with swimwear worn underneath their clothing. All personal belongings should be left on poolside. At the end of the swim, customers are to remain in their swimwear, towel-dry, and then put their clothing back over their swimwear before exiting the poolside area. It is imperative, for safeguarding purposes, that customers refrain from attempting to remove swimwear. |

The NHS in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent has been working with local patients, staff, interested groups and partners to understand how mental health services could be designed.
Our priority is to deliver quality mental healthcare for patients in their own home or community whenever possible, rather than in hospital.
This model of care is the national ambition set out in the NHS Long Term Plan. It is based on the latest clinical evidence, which shows this approach gives patients the best possible outcomes.
This is not new. We have been working with partners and investing in our community mental health services for many years. We have enhanced our community teams and developed better ways of working that help us meet the national goals – like making community services easier to access and giving people more choice and control over their treatment.
We want to hear from people who have used mental health services in the last three years, as well as from people who work within mental health services.
We also want to hear from people who support people using mental health services as well as people who have no experience of mental health services.

In a display of community engagement and environmental consciousness, the South Staffordshire Enterprise team recently embarked on a volunteering mission at the Edward Marsh Centre.
The team joined forces with the centre to partake in a tree planting extravaganza. With shovels in hands, they worked to create a greener, picturesque environment for the local community. This collaborative effort not only beautified the surroundings but also contributed to the preservation of the natural ecosystem.
The Edward Marsh Centre in Kinver is a registered charity, led by volunteers. This community centre is surrounded by parkland, including a variety of public footpaths. The centre includes a café, large function rooms and cricket and football pitches. We encourage everyone to visit when in Kinver!

The first ever recording of the greater horseshoe bat in the north of South Staffordshire district was made in 2020.
More recently, in late 2023, details were provided to the council’s planning ecologist as part of a planning application report.
Greater horseshoe bats are legally protected, but their appearance in South Staffordshire is exciting news as it is one of the most northerly locations they have been seen in the UK, as they are usually found in southwest England and Wales.
As a result of this discovery, the council is making developers aware of the presence of this vulnerable and sensitive species, to ensure the future establishment and maintenance of future colonies in the district.
Read all the details here.

In the news roundup last week, we published the incorrect name of the action group – below is the correct name.
On Monday, April 9th and Tuesday, April 10th Bilbrook Climate Action Group, a working Group of Bilbrook Parish Council, carried out an anti-idle campaign outside of Lane Green Primary School between 2.30pm and 3.30pm each day. The council’s lead officer in air quality, Wendy Green, joined them on Tuesday to see how things were going. Several people were there to support the campaign ranging from volunteers, parents, PCSO’s and local Councillors Gary Burnett and Fiona Hopkins. Monday was clearly a success as by Tuesday the group went from having to ask 15 car drivers to switch off their engines to 5. In addition, there were no dangerously parked cars that had to be moved on by the PCSO’s on Tuesday. The air quality throughout the district of South Staffordshire is of a good quality. However, there is always room for improvement and campaigns such as these really help focus the public attention on simple things that can be done to help everyone. If you would like to know more about the benefits of anti-idling and the legislation in place to support it, click here. |

Hello, I’m Tim Norbury, your Local Policing Commander for South Staffordshire.
I have been within the Police service for 15 years and have experienced a multitude of differing roles at various ranks, in a number of different locations across Staffordshire. The opportunities I have enjoyed have provided me with experience and skills that I believe will be of benefit to South Staffordshire. I am very passionate about Policing and my ambition is to improve in all areas of our business. My current priorities for South Staffordshire are:
These priorities are identified from early discussions I have held with partners, community representatives and our community safety partnership, all of whom have been extremely welcoming and are keen to continue working with our service so that we can collectively provide an outstanding service to the general public of South Staffordshire. I have already been out and about in many of the parishes in South Staffordshire and will be attending various events over the coming weeks and months. If you see me ‘out and about’ don’t be shy and feel free to say hello or have a conversation about concerns or good news in your area. I will continue to keep you informed and will hopefully see some of you soon. |
